Actor Alan Rickman has died at the age of 69, and our hearts are broken. Though most will remember Rickman as Harry Potter's Severus Snape, Rickman also touched our lives through his performances in many films, from playing the ultimate baddie in Die Hard, to the honorable lit-girl crush Colonel Brandon in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, and so many, many more.
In addition to Colonel Brandon, Rickman’s literary roles include: Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet (1978); the Rev. Obadiah Slope in The Barchester Chronicles (1982); the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Price of Thieves (1991); Severus Snape in all eight of the Harry Potter films (2001-2011); Marvin the Paranoid Android in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005); Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2005); and, the Blue Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Alice Through the Looking Glass, to be released later in 2016.
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling tweeted this morning: “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man.”
